Trump urges Netanyahu to adjust Israeli policies in West Bank
The request was raised during a meeting in Florida that brought together Trump, Netanyahu, and several high-level US officials, including the secretary of state, a special envoy, and the president’s son-in-law, according to accounts citing officials familiar with the discussion.
According to the reports, US officials warned that any surge in violence in the West Bank could derail attempts to implement a Gaza peace arrangement and hinder efforts to expand regional normalization initiatives before the end of Trump’s presidency. The White House was said to be particularly concerned that escalating tensions could undermine broader diplomatic goals.
During the talks, Trump and his advisers conveyed unease over developments in the West Bank and urged Netanyahu to refrain from actions viewed as inflammatory and to “calm things down,” the sources said. They also highlighted several issues, including attacks by settlers against Palestinian civilians, the worsening financial condition of the Palestinian Authority, and the continued expansion of Israeli settlements.
"Netanyahu spoke very strongly against settler violence and said he is going to take more action," the source with knowledge was quoted as saying by reports.
Following the meeting, Trump addressed reporters and acknowledged that Washington and Tel Aviv do not see eye to eye on every aspect of the West Bank issue, while expressing confidence that a resolution would eventually be reached.
“We have had a discussion, big discussion, for a long time on the West Bank, and I wouldn't say we agree on the West Bank 100%, but we’ll come to a conclusion,” he said when asked if he is concerned about Israeli settler violence in the West Bank and whether he had conveyed a message to Netanyahu regarding the occupied territory.
“It'll be announced at an appropriate time, but he will do the right thing,” he said, referring to Netanyahu.
Since October 2023, Israeli forces and settlers deemed illegal under international law have killed at least 1,103 Palestinians across the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, wounded close to 11,000 others, and detained roughly 21,000 people, according to Palestinian data.
Last July, an international court issued a landmark advisory opinion declaring Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories unlawful and calling for the removal of all settlements from the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
