Florida Sues OpenAI, Altman Over ChatGPT Risks

(MENAFN) FLORIDA — Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier on Tuesday announced what he described as the first state-led lawsuit in the United States against OpenAI and its chief executive, Sam Altman, accusing the artificial intelligence company of deceptive conduct and exposing residents to significant risks.

According to the attorney general’s office, the lawsuit alleges that OpenAI knowingly launched and heavily promoted its ChatGPT platform to the public, including minors, while failing to disclose serious operational dangers and allegedly disregarding internal safety concerns.

"OpenAI and Altman ignored internal and external safety warnings, put children at great risk, and allowed a dangerous product to reach millions of Floridians," Uthmeier said in a press conference on Tuesday.

The civil complaint was filed in Florida’s 10th Judicial Circuit and contends that OpenAI prioritized rapid deployment and financial growth over user protection. State officials further claim the company provided assurances about the platform’s safety that did not accurately reflect its risks.

Florida’s legal authorities also argue that the generative AI tool gathers sensitive information from minors without adequate parental supervision, contributes to addictive usage patterns, and can generate harmful inaccuracies.

The lawsuit comes weeks after the Office of Statewide Prosecution opened a separate criminal investigation. That probe was initiated following a review of conversations between ChatGPT and Phoenix Ikner, the gunman accused of killing two people and wounding several others during a shooting at Florida State University in April 2025.
